Ampelopsin (also known as dihydromyricetin or DHM) is a flavonoid compound primarily derived from the plant Ampelopsis grossedentata. There is a growing body of preclinical scientific evidence suggesting that ampelopsin may have beneficial effects on fatty liver disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several animal studies have shown that ampelopsin can reduce liver fat accumulation, improve lipid metabolism, decrease inflammation, and attenuate oxidative stress in models of fatty liver disease. For example, research published in peer-reviewed journals between 2012 and 2023 has demonstrated that ampelopsin supplementation reduces hepatic steatosis and improves markers of liver function in mice fed high-fat diets.

The proposed mechanisms include the regulation of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), improvement of insulin sensitivity, and modulation of inflammatory pathways. However, it is important to note that while these effects are promising, the majority of evidence comes from in vitro studies and animal models. There is a scarcity of high-quality human clinical trials directly investigating the efficacy of ampelopsin for the treatment or support of fatty liver disease. As such, while scientific interest is justified and early data are encouraging, the overall evidence level remains modest (rated 2/5), and more rigorous human studies are needed before ampelopsin can be recommended as a standard therapy for fatty liver disease.
