Anemarrhena asphodeloides is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb sometimes investigated for its potential benefits in metabolic diseases, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Scientific interest centers around its main bioactive component, timosaponin, and other steroidal saponins, which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering properties in preclinical models.

Several animal studies have shown that extracts from Anemarrhena or its isolated compounds can ameliorate hepatic steatosis, reduce liver inflammation, and improve insulin sensitivity in models of NAFLD. For example, studies published in peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Molecules, 2018; Phytotherapy Research, 2019) report that timosaponin B-II can modulate lipid metabolism pathways and suppress oxidative stress in mice fed high-fat diets. Mechanistically, these effects are thought to involve regulation of AMPK and PPAR pathways, both relevant to hepatic fat accumulation and metabolic homeostasis.

However, evidence remains preliminary. There are no robust clinical trials in humans confirming the efficacy or safety of Anemarrhena extracts for fatty liver disease. Most data are derived from animal studies or in vitro experiments, which may not directly translate to clinical benefit.
