Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) has been investigated in several preclinical studies for its potential benefits in metabolic and liver health, including fatty liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD). The plant contains unique compounds known as chalcones (such as 4-hydroxyderricin and xanthoangelol), which have demonstrated anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering activities in cell and animal models. Some studies in mice fed a high-fat diet found that ashitaba extract supplementation could reduce hepatic fat accumulation, improve liver enzyme profiles, and decrease markers of oxidative stress. These effects are thought to be due to modulation of lipid metabolism pathways and reduction of inflammation in liver tissue.

However, there is limited direct evidence in humans. No large-scale, randomized controlled trials have been conducted to confirm the efficacy or safety of ashitaba for treating or managing fatty liver disease in people. Most available evidence comes from animal experiments and in vitro studies, which, while promising, do not guarantee similar results in humans due to differences in metabolism and physiology.

In summary, while there is some preliminary scientific rationale and supportive animal data, clinical validation is lacking. Therefore, ashitaba’s use for fatty liver disease can be rated as scientific*2*, reflecting low-to-moderate preclinical evidence but insufficient human research at this time.
