Some animal studies have shown that avocado extract can reduce liver fat accumulation and oxidative stress, both of which are implicated in NAFLD. For example, a 2014 study in rats found that avocado supplementation reduced markers of liver damage and improved antioxidant status. Observational human studies suggest that diets high in monounsaturated fatty acids, like those found in avocados, are associated with improved liver enzyme profiles and reduced risk of fatty liver.
However, there are currently no large, high-quality clinical trials directly demonstrating that eating avocado treats or reverses fatty liver disease in humans.
