Baicalin is a flavonoid compound primarily derived from the roots of Scutellaria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. In recent years, research has explored the potential benefits of baicalin for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and related liver disorders. Several preclinical studies using cell cultures and animal models suggest that baicalin may exert hepatoprotective effects by modulating lipid metabolism, reducing hepatic inflammation, and attenuating oxidative stress. For example, baicalin has been shown to downregulate genes involved in lipid accumulation and upregulate antioxidant pathways, which may help reduce liver fat and prevent progression to steatohepatitis. Additionally, some studies have reported that baicalin supplementation can decrease markers of liver injury and improve liver histology in rodent models of fatty liver disease.
However, evidence from human clinical trials remains limited. While there are a few small-scale studies and clinical observations supporting the benefit of baicalin-containing herbal formulas in improving liver function markers, robust randomized controlled trials specifically examining baicalin's effects on fatty liver disease are lacking. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and preclinical support for using baicalin to manage fatty liver disease, the overall strength of evidence is moderate and primarily based on animal studies rather than conclusive human data.
