Bifidobacterium animalis lactis has some emerging scientific evidence supporting its potential role in managing fatty liver disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several preclinical and a handful of small clinical studies have investigated how this probiotic strain may impact liver health. The primary mechanism appears to involve modulation of the gut microbiota, strengthening the intestinal barrier, reducing systemic inflammation, and influencing lipid metabolism—all of which are implicated in the pathogenesis of fatty liver disease.

For example, certain animal studies have shown that supplementation with B. animalis lactis can reduce hepatic fat accumulation, decrease markers of liver inflammation, and improve metabolic parameters in rodents fed high-fat diets. Some small human trials and pilot studies have reported that multispecies probiotic supplements containing B. animalis lactis may improve liver enzyme levels and markers of oxidative stress in patients with NAFLD. However, these studies often use combination probiotics, making it difficult to isolate the effects of B. animalis lactis alone.

Overall, the clinical evidence remains preliminary, limited by small sample sizes and short durations. While preclinical data are promising, larger and more rigorous human trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy and optimal dosing. As of now, the use of B. animalis lactis for fatty liver disease is scientifically plausible but not yet strongly validated.
