Blakeslea trispora is a filamentous fungus primarily known for its industrial production of carotenoids, especially beta-carotene and lycopene. Some recent scientific studies, mostly preclinical (animal or in vitro), have explored the potential hepatoprotective and anti-steatotic effects of carotenoids derived from Blakeslea trispora. The rationale is based on the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid metabolism-modulating properties of these carotenoids. For example, lycopene and beta-carotene have been shown in some animal models of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) to reduce hepatic lipid accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammation. A few studies have used carotenoid extracts produced by Blakeslea trispora specifically, reporting improvements in markers of fatty liver in mice or cell models. However, human clinical data are lacking, and the evidence is not yet robust.
