Brassica vegetables, including broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, and kale, have been investigated for their potential benefits in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The scientific rationale is based on their high content of glucosinolates, which are converted in the body to bioactive compounds such as sulforaphane and indole-3-carbinol. These compounds have demonstrated antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects in preclinical studies. Experimental research in animal models has shown that Brassica extracts, especially broccoli, can reduce hepatic fat accumulation, improve liver enzyme profiles, and decrease markers of oxidative stress and inflammation associated with fatty liver disease. Human data, while limited, are promising; for example, a small clinical trial found that broccoli supplementation reduced liver fat and improved glycemic control in patients with NAFLD. Additionally, observational studies suggest a correlation between higher intake of cruciferous vegetables and lower risk of liver disease. However, large-scale randomized controlled trials are lacking, and the optimal dose and preparation of Brassica vegetables for therapeutic effects are yet to be established. Therefore, while there is scientific support for their potential benefit, the evidence is moderate and primarily preclinical or preliminary clinical in nature, warranting further research before definitive recommendations can be made for the management of fatty liver disease.
