Catechins, a type of polyphenol found abundantly in green tea, have been investigated for their potential benefits in supporting or treating Fatty Liver Disease, especially non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The scientific rationale stems from catechins’ antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Several preclinical studies have demonstrated that catechins can reduce hepatic fat accumulation, oxidative stress, and inflammatory markers in animal models of fatty liver disease. Human clinical trials, although limited in number and scale, have also provided some supportive evidence. For example, randomized controlled trials have shown that green tea extract supplementation (rich in catechins) can lead to reductions in liver fat content, liver enzymes (ALT and AST), and markers of oxidative stress in patients with NAFLD.

However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate. Many clinical studies are small, short-term, or have methodological limitations. A 2020 meta-analysis concluded that green tea catechin supplementation may improve liver enzyme levels and reduce liver fat, but called for larger, more rigorous trials. There are also safety considerations, as high doses of green tea extracts have, in rare cases, been linked to liver toxicity.

In summary, the use of catechins for fatty liver disease is supported by a growing body of scientific research, but the evidence is not yet robust enough for widespread clinical endorsement. Catechins are not a replacement for established treatments, but may be considered as an adjunctive support under medical supervision.
