Evidence supporting the use of: Chia seed
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chia seeds (Salvia hispanica L.) have garnered scientific interest for their potential benefits in metabolic disorders, including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Chia seeds are rich in alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a plant-based omega-3 fatty acid, as well as dietary fiber and antioxidants. A limited number of animal studies and small human trials suggest chia seed supplementation can improve lipid profiles, reduce hepatic fat accumulation, and modulate inflammation—factors relevant to fatty liver disease. For example, a 2014 study in rats showed that chia seed supplementation reduced hepatic steatosis and improved insulin sensitivity. A small 2017 human pilot study found that daily chia seed intake for eight weeks led to significant reductions in visceral fat and improvements in liver enzymes among overweight adults—suggesting potential benefit for NAFLD.
However, the clinical evidence is still preliminary, with few high-quality, large-scale human trials specifically focused on NAFLD. The proposed mechanisms include the modulation of lipid metabolism, improvement of gut microbiota, and anti-inflammatory effects. While chia seeds are not a primary or traditional remedy for fatty liver disease, their inclusion in a healthy diet may confer some benefit as part of a broader lifestyle modification plan. More robust clinical trials are needed to firmly establish efficacy and optimal dosing. Therefore, current scientific support is modest but promising, and chia seeds are sometimes recommended as a dietary adjunct rather than a standalone treatment for fatty liver disease.
