Evidence supporting the use of: Chlorella
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chlorella, a type of freshwater green algae, has been investigated for its potential in supporting the management of Fatty Liver Disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Scientific interest in chlorella stems from its rich content of antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and its purported ability to modulate lipid metabolism. Several small-scale clinical trials and animal studies have been conducted to assess its benefits for liver health. For example, a randomized controlled trial in patients with NAFLD found that daily supplementation with chlorella (1,200 mg/day) for 8 weeks resulted in significant reductions in liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST) and some improvement in lipid profiles compared to placebo. Animal studies have also shown that chlorella supplementation can reduce hepatic fat accumulation, likely due to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, as well as modulation of lipid metabolism pathways. However, the evidence remains preliminary, with most human studies being small, short-term, and sometimes lacking robust controls. Thus, while there is some scientific validation for chlorella’s use in supporting liver health and potentially improving markers of fatty liver disease, the overall quality and quantity of evidence is still limited. More large-scale, well-controlled clinical trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy and safety for this specific condition.
