Curcuma, particularly Curcuma longa (turmeric), has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting or treating Fatty Liver Disease (FLD), including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). The primary active component, curcumin, is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering properties. Several preclinical studies (in vitro and animal models) have shown that curcumin can reduce hepatic fat accumulation, decrease liver inflammation, and improve insulin resistance—key factors in the pathogenesis of FLD. Human clinical trials are more limited but have shown promising results; for example, a 2016 randomized controlled trial found that curcumin supplementation significantly reduced liver fat content and markers of liver injury in patients with NAFLD compared to placebo.

Despite these promising results, the overall quality and size of human studies remain moderate, and more large-scale, long-term trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Curcuma’s use in FLD is thus supported by emerging scientific evidence, though it is not yet universally recommended as a standard therapy. Traditional systems of medicine, such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, have also used turmeric for liver health, but the primary justification for its use in FLD today comes from scientific research on curcumin’s biological effects.
