Evidence supporting the use of: Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major catechin found in green tea, has been investigated for its potential benefits in supporting or treating Fatty Liver Disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several preclinical studies in cell and animal models have shown that EGCG can reduce hepatic fat accumulation, lipid peroxidation, and inflammation—processes implicated in the development and progression of fatty liver disease. The proposed mechanisms include inhibition of lipogenesis, enhancement of fatty acid oxidation, antioxidant effects, and modulation of key signaling pathways such as AMPK and SREBP-1c.
Human clinical evidence, however, remains limited and somewhat mixed. Some small randomized controlled trials have suggested that green tea extract or EGCG supplementation may reduce liver fat content, serum ALT/AST, and inflammatory markers in individuals with NAFLD. For example, a 2016 randomized trial published in International Journal of Molecular Medicine found that 500 mg/day of green tea extract (rich in EGCG) over 12 weeks improved liver enzyme levels and reduced liver fat in NAFLD patients. However, other studies have not found significant benefits, and concerns about rare but serious hepatotoxicity with high-dose EGCG use exist.
Overall, while there is a plausible scientific rationale and some early clinical evidence for EGCG’s use in fatty liver disease, the current level of evidence is still preliminary. More robust, large-scale human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety.
