Ergothioneine is a naturally occurring amino acid derivative with antioxidant properties, found in foods such as mushrooms. While ergothioneine is not a traditional remedy for fatty liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD), recent scientific research has begun to explore its potential benefits for this condition. Preclinical studies, primarily in animal models, suggest that ergothioneine may help protect the liver from oxidative stress and inflammation—two key mechanisms involved in the progression of fatty liver disease.
For example, several mouse studies have indicated that ergothioneine supplementation can reduce liver fat accumulation, decrease markers of liver injury (such as ALT and AST), and improve insulin sensitivity. These effects are thought to result from ergothioneine’s ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and modulate inflammatory pathways. A few small human observational studies have linked higher ergothioneine levels with better metabolic health, but direct clinical trials investigating its effectiveness in treating or preventing fatty liver disease in humans are lacking as of mid-2024.
Overall, while the mechanistic rationale is strong and early animal data are promising, the evidence is not yet robust or direct enough to strongly support ergothioneine as a treatment for fatty liver disease in humans. More clinical research is needed. Thus, the scientific evidence currently rates as modest (2/5).
