Evidence supporting the use of: Eriocitrin
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Eriocitrin is a flavonoid glycoside predominantly found in lemons and other citrus fruits. Its potential use for supporting or treating Fatty Liver Disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD) is based on emerging scientific evidence rather than traditional use. Several preclinical studies, particularly those involving rodent models, have shown that eriocitrin can improve liver function markers, decrease hepatic lipid accumulation, and reduce oxidative stress and inflammation—key factors involved in the pathogenesis of NAFLD. For example, published research has demonstrated that eriocitrin supplementation in high-fat diet-induced NAFLD in rats resulted in improved liver histology and reduced triglyceride content.
The proposed mechanisms underlying these benefits include the activation of antioxidant pathways (such as Nrf2), improved lipid metabolism, and suppression of inflammatory cytokines. However, it is important to note that human clinical trials evaluating eriocitrin’s efficacy and safety in the context of NAFLD are currently lacking. Most of the available evidence is limited to laboratory and animal studies, which means translation to human outcomes remains uncertain.
In summary, while there is a scientific rationale and some supportive preclinical data for using eriocitrin in fatty liver disease, direct clinical evidence in humans is insufficient at this time. The current evidence level would be rated as modest (2 out of 5), pending further research.
