Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is increasingly studied for its potential benefits in supporting liver health, particularly in the context of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several clinical trials and animal studies have investigated its effects on liver enzymes, inflammation, oxidative stress, and lipid profiles. The rationale is largely based on ginger’s well-documented antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which may counteract some of the underlying mechanisms of fatty liver disease.
A number of small randomized controlled trials (RCTs) suggest that ginger supplementation (typically around 1-2 grams per day, for 8-12 weeks) may lead to significant reductions in liver enzymes (ALT, AST), improvements in lipid profiles, and decreases in markers of oxidative stress in patients with NAFLD. For example, a 2016 RCT published in the World Journal of Gastroenterology found that ginger supplementation improved several parameters of liver function and metabolic health in NAFLD patients compared to placebo. Animal studies have consistently demonstrated ginger’s ability to reduce fat accumulation in the liver and improve histological markers of NAFLD.
Despite these promising findings, the overall body of evidence is still limited by small sample sizes, short durations, and variability in study designs. Larger and longer-term clinical trials are needed before ginger can be firmly recommended as a therapeutic intervention. Nonetheless, current scientific evidence provides moderate support for ginger’s beneficial effects in fatty liver disease, justifying a rating of 3 out of 5.
