Animal studies and limited human trials suggest that diets high in monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFAs), such as omega-9, may help reduce liver fat accumulation, improve lipid profiles, and decrease inflammation compared to diets rich in saturated fats. For example, several studies have shown that a Mediterranean diet—rich in olive oil (a primary source of omega-9)—is associated with lower liver fat and improved markers of NAFLD.
However, direct clinical trials specifically supplementing omega-9 for the treatment or reversal of fatty liver disease in humans are limited. Most evidence is indirect, focusing on dietary patterns rather than isolated omega-9 supplementation. The benefits observed may also be due to the overall nutrient composition of the Mediterranean diet rather than omega-9 alone.
