Oxymatrine is an alkaloid extracted from the root of Sophora flavescens, a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. Its use for fatty liver disease (also known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD) is primarily supported by preclinical and some clinical studies, rather than a long tradition of use for this particular condition.
Scientific research indicates that oxymatrine exhibits hepatoprotective, anti-inflammatory, and anti-fibrotic properties. Several animal studies have shown that oxymatrine can reduce hepatic steatosis, decrease liver enzyme levels, and attenuate inflammation and fibrosis in models of NAFLD. The proposed mechanisms include downregulation of inflammatory cytokines, inhibition of hepatic stellate cell activation, and reduction of oxidative stress.
A limited number of human clinical trials have also been conducted. Small-scale studies in China suggest oxymatrine may improve liver function tests and decrease liver fat content in patients with NAFLD, although these studies are often of modest quality, with limitations in study design, sample size, and duration.
In summary, the use of oxymatrine for fatty liver disease is justified by early scientific evidence, mainly from animal models and preliminary human trials. More robust, large-scale, and high-quality clinical studies are needed to firmly establish its efficacy and safety for NAFLD in humans.
