Phaeophyceae, commonly known as brown algae or brown seaweeds (including species such as Ascophyllum nodosum, Laminaria, and Ecklonia cava), have been investigated for their potential benefits in supporting liver health, including fatty liver disease (hepatic steatosis). Scientific interest is primarily due to bioactive compounds present in brown algae, such as fucoxanthin, phlorotannins, and alginates.
Several preclinical studies (mainly in vitro and animal models) suggest that fucoxanthin and other components may improve lipid metabolism, reduce oxidative stress, and exert anti-inflammatory effects, which are relevant to the pathogenesis of fatty liver disease. For example, animal studies have demonstrated that fucoxanthin supplementation can reduce liver fat accumulation and improve lipid profiles. Some small human trials and observational studies suggest potential benefits, but data are limited and often confounded by other factors.
There is no substantial tradition of using brown algae specifically for fatty liver disease in folk or traditional medicine systems. Most evidence supporting its use is recent and science-driven. However, the quality and quantity of human clinical trials are insufficient to draw firm conclusions, and no major medical guidelines recommend Phaeophyceae for fatty liver disease. Therefore, while there is some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, it remains modest and not definitive.
