Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a major phospholipid component of cell membranes and is involved in lipid metabolism. Its use in supporting or treating Fatty Liver Disease (hepatic steatosis), particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), has some scientific rationale, but the overall evidence is limited and not robust. Experimental and some clinical studies suggest that PC may help normalize lipid metabolism in the liver, improve membrane integrity, and reduce hepatic fat accumulation. For example, studies in animal models have shown that phosphatidylcholine supplementation can reduce liver fat and inflammation. In humans, some small-scale clinical trials from the 1980s and 1990s suggested that PC supplementation might improve biochemical markers of liver function and histological features in patients with fatty liver, but these studies were often limited by small sample size, lack of blinding, and other methodological issues.

Contemporary systematic reviews indicate that while PC may have a hepatoprotective role, high-quality randomized controlled trials are lacking, and its routine use cannot be strongly recommended. Guidelines from major liver associations do not currently endorse phosphatidylcholine as a standard therapy for NAFLD. Thus, the scientific evidence supporting its use is modest (rated 2/5), and more rigorous studies are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in this context.
