Evidence supporting the use of: Prebiotic blend (proprietary)
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Prebiotic blends, typically containing fibers such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS), or galactooligosaccharides (GOS), are used to support gut microbiome health. There is emerging scientific interest in the gut-liver axis—the relationship between gut microbiota and liver function—in the context of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several clinical and preclinical studies indicate that dysbiosis (an imbalance in gut bacteria) may contribute to the development and progression of fatty liver disease. Prebiotics can modulate gut microbiota, increase beneficial bacteria (like Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli), reduce gut permeability, decrease systemic inflammation, and lower endotoxin levels that reach the liver, potentially exerting a protective effect on liver health.
However, the evidence is still preliminary. A limited number of small-scale human clinical trials and animal studies have shown improvements in liver enzymes, hepatic fat content, and markers of inflammation after prebiotic supplementation. For example, some studies using inulin or FOS have reported reduced liver fat or improved insulin sensitivity in NAFLD patients. Nevertheless, these results are not yet consistent, and large, well-designed human trials are lacking. Thus, while there is scientific rationale and early evidence for using prebiotic blends in fatty liver disease, the strength of evidence remains modest at present.
