Evidence supporting the use of: Rice bran oil
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Rice bran oil has garnered some scientific interest for its potential benefits in managing fatty liver disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This oil is rich in unsaturated fatty acids, tocotrienols, tocopherols, and oryzanol, compounds known for their antioxidant and lipid-lowering effects. Several animal studies and a handful of small human trials have suggested that rice bran oil may help reduce hepatic fat accumulation, improve lipid profiles, and decrease markers of oxidative stress, all of which are relevant to fatty liver pathology. For instance, a 2013 animal study published in "Lipids in Health and Disease" found that rice bran oil supplementation reduced hepatic steatosis and improved markers of liver function in rats fed a high-fat diet. Human evidence remains limited but is emerging; a small randomized controlled trial in 2017 reported improved liver enzymes and lipid profiles in individuals with NAFLD who consumed rice bran oil versus controls.
Despite these promising findings, the overall quality and quantity of evidence are still insufficient to make strong clinical recommendations. Most studies are preclinical or involve small sample sizes, and longer-term, larger human studies are required. Nonetheless, the available data provide a rationale for further investigation and cautiously support rice bran oil as a potentially beneficial dietary fat for individuals with fatty liver disease.
