Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Schizochytrium is a microalga primarily valued as a rich source of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The rationale for its use in supporting or treating Fatty Liver Disease, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is based on the established role of omega-3 fatty acids in improving hepatic lipid metabolism and reducing liver fat accumulation. Several preclinical studies in animal models have shown that omega-3 supplementation, including DHA derived from Schizochytrium, can reduce hepatic triglyceride content and markers of inflammation. In humans, most clinical trials have used fish oil-derived omega-3s, but a few small studies and reviews suggest that algal DHA (such as from Schizochytrium) may have similar benefits in improving liver fat content and metabolic parameters. However, direct clinical evidence specifically using Schizochytrium in patients with fatty liver disease is limited; most data are extrapolated from broader omega-3 research. There is no historical or traditional use of Schizochytrium for liver conditions; its application is a recent development based on its biochemical composition. Overall, scientific rationale exists, but direct clinical evidence remains modest, warranting a rating of 2 out of 5 for evidence strength regarding its use in fatty liver disease.
