Evidence supporting the use of: Sea Buckthorn
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sea Buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoides) has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, particularly in Asia, for a range of health benefits, including liver support. In recent years, some scientific studies have examined its effects on fatty liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD). The bioactive constituents of sea buckthorn—especially flavonoids, carotenoids, and unsaturated fatty acids—are thought to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and lipid-lowering effects, which could theoretically benefit liver health.
A handful of animal studies have reported that sea buckthorn extracts may reduce hepatic fat accumulation, improve liver enzyme levels, and ameliorate oxidative stress in models of NAFLD. For example, mouse studies have shown improvements in markers of liver injury and decreases in fat deposition after supplementation with sea buckthorn extracts or oil. There are also limited human studies: a small randomized controlled trial suggested that sea buckthorn pulp oil could improve some biochemical markers associated with fatty liver, but sample sizes were small and results were not always statistically significant.
Overall, while preclinical evidence is promising, clinical evidence in humans remains limited and is of low quality. More robust, large-scale human trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Thus, the scientific evidence supporting sea buckthorn for fatty liver disease is preliminary, justifying a modest evidence rating.
