Seaweed has garnered scientific interest for its potential benefits in supporting or treating Fatty Liver Disease (FLD), particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Several animal and limited human studies have investigated the hepatoprotective properties of various seaweed species, such as brown algae (Laminaria and Undaria), red algae, and green algae. These benefits are primarily attributed to bioactive compounds like fucoxanthin, phlorotannins, polysaccharides (such as fucoidan), and dietary fibers found in seaweed.
Preclinical studies have shown that seaweed extracts can reduce hepatic lipid accumulation, improve insulin sensitivity, and decrease inflammation and oxidative stress in the liver. For example, fucoxanthin has demonstrated the ability to modulate lipid metabolism by increasing hepatic fatty acid oxidation and reducing lipogenesis in animal models. Some human studies, though limited in scale and duration, have indicated that seaweed supplementation may improve liver enzyme profiles and metabolic parameters in patients with NAFLD.
Despite these promising results, the clinical evidence remains moderate due to the small size and limited number of well-controlled human trials. Most recommendations are currently based on preclinical research, mechanistic plausibility, and a few early-phase clinical studies. Larger, long-term human studies are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. In summary, the use of seaweed for fatty liver disease is supported by emerging scientific evidence, justifying further exploration but not yet forming a standard part of clinical management.
