Tangeretin is a polymethoxylated flavone predominantly found in the peels of citrus fruits, particularly tangerines. Recent scientific interest has focused on its potential hepatoprotective effects, including its relevance to fatty liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD). Several preclinical studies, primarily in animal models and in vitro systems, have reported that tangeretin can attenuate hepatic lipid accumulation, reduce oxidative stress, and modulate inflammatory pathways implicated in the progression of fatty liver disease. For example, studies have shown that tangeretin administration in high-fat diet-induced mouse models leads to improvements in liver histology, reduced triglyceride accumulation, and decreased markers of inflammation and fibrosis. Mechanistically, tangeretin may exert its effects by activating the AMPK pathway, enhancing fatty acid oxidation, and downregulating genes involved in lipogenesis. However, it is important to note that the current body of evidence is limited to preclinical models; there are no published clinical trials in humans specifically examining the efficacy of tangeretin for fatty liver disease. Thus, while the mechanistic and animal data are promising, the direct translation of these findings to human therapy remains unproven. The use of tangeretin for fatty liver disease is not based on traditional medicine but rather on emerging scientific research.
