Tanshinone is a class of compounds derived from the roots of Salvia miltiorrhiza (Danshen), a traditional Chinese medicinal herb. In recent years, there has been growing scientific interest in the potential of tanshinones, particularly Tanshinone IIA, to support or treat fatty liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD). Preclinical studies in cell culture and animal models have demonstrated that tanshinones can reduce hepatic lipid accumulation, modulate lipid metabolism, and exert anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, all of which are relevant to fatty liver disease pathogenesis. For instance, Tanshinone IIA has been shown to activate AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) pathways, suppress lipogenesis, and enhance fatty acid oxidation in the liver. Some studies also suggest it may ameliorate insulin resistance and reduce liver fibrosis in NAFLD models. However, to date, high-quality clinical trials in humans are very limited, and most available evidence comes from experimental research and small pilot studies. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale and some supporting laboratory evidence for the use of tanshinones in fatty liver disease, clinical validation remains insufficient. The current rating reflects promising preclinical findings with a need for more robust human data before widespread therapeutic use can be recommended.
