Evidence supporting the use of: Ursolic Acid
For the health condition: Fatty Liver Disease
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ursolic acid is a naturally occurring triterpenoid compound found in many plants, such as apple peels, rosemary, and holy basil. Recent scientific studies, primarily in animal models and limited in vitro human cell studies, suggest that ursolic acid may have beneficial effects for fatty liver disease (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, NAFLD). Its mechanisms of action are thought to include anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering effects. For example, several rodent studies have shown that ursolic acid supplementation can reduce hepatic lipid accumulation, improve insulin sensitivity, and decrease markers of liver inflammation and fibrosis. In one notable study (Zhang et al., PLoS One, 2013), mice fed a high-fat diet supplemented with ursolic acid had significantly less hepatic fat and lower levels of liver enzymes indicative of damage.
However, there is a lack of high-quality clinical trials in humans directly evaluating ursolic acid for fatty liver disease. Most evidence is preclinical, and dosing, safety, and efficacy parameters are not well established for human populations. Therefore, while the use of ursolic acid for fatty liver disease is based on scientific rationale and promising preclinical data, it cannot yet be considered an evidence-based therapy, and its overall evidence rating is low to moderate (2/5).
