Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3

Agnuside is a key iridoid glycoside found in the fruit of Vitex agnus-castus (chaste tree), a plant traditionally used to support female reproductive health. Historical records dating back to ancient Greece and Rome document the use of chaste tree berries for managing menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and symptoms related to menopause. The use of Vitex in herbal medicine has persisted through centuries, particularly in Europe, where it is commonly employed to address hormonal imbalances and support the menstrual cycle.

The traditional use of Agnuside-containing Vitex extracts is based on observed effects such as regulation of the menstrual cycle and alleviation of PMS symptoms, possibly due to modulation of prolactin and other hormones. While some modern research has investigated Vitex extracts (which contain Agnuside as a marker compound), the direct effects of Agnuside itself on the female reproductive system have not been thoroughly isolated in clinical studies. Most available evidence supports the use of Vitex as a whole rather than Agnuside alone, and even these studies are generally limited in size and scope. Therefore, the justification for using Agnuside to support the female reproductive system is primarily traditional, with moderate support from clinical experience and historical usage, but lacking robust, direct scientific validation for the isolated compound.
