Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo) has a long history of use in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. It has been employed primarily for its purported benefits in addressing gynecological conditions such as menstrual irregularities, premenstrual syndrome (PMS), and menopausal symptoms. The historical evidence highlights its application as an analgesic and anti-inflammatory agent, which may contribute to symptom relief in women experiencing menstrual discomfort. Unlike its close relative, Vitex agnus-castus (Chaste Tree or Monk’s Pepper), which has some limited clinical evidence for its effects on the menstrual cycle and PMS, Vitex negundo has not been extensively studied in modern scientific research for these indications. Most support for its use in the female reproductive system comes from traditional texts and anecdotal reports rather than robust clinical trials. Phytochemical analyses have revealed the presence of flavonoids, iridoids, and volatile oils, which could theoretically impact hormone balance or inflammation, but direct evidence in humans is lacking.
