Evidence supporting the use of: Fatty acids
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Fatty acids, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, have scientific validation for supporting the female reproductive system. Numerous studies suggest that omega-3 fatty acids (such as EPA and DHA, commonly found in fish oil) positively influence menstrual health, fertility, and pregnancy outcomes. For example, research has shown that omega-3 supplementation may help regulate menstrual cycles and reduce symptoms associated with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Additionally, omega-3s are important for reducing inflammation, which can benefit conditions like endometriosis.
During pregnancy, adequate intake of DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, is critical for fetal brain and eye development. Maternal consumption of omega-3s has also been linked to lower risk of preterm birth. Some studies indicate that omega-3 fatty acids might support healthy hormone production and improve egg quality, which can be relevant for women trying to conceive.
While more research is needed to clarify some mechanisms and optimal dosages, the overall body of evidence supports the role of specific fatty acids in female reproductive health. Major health organizations, including the American Pregnancy Association, recommend omega-3 fatty acids for pregnant and reproductive-age women. However, not all fatty acids are beneficial, and balance with omega-6 fatty acids is also important.
