Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 5

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (hCG) is a hormone produced during pregnancy by the placenta. Its primary scientific use in supporting the female reproductive system is well-established, particularly in the context of fertility treatments. hCG is structurally similar to Luteinizing Hormone (LH), and it acts on the LH receptor to trigger ovulation and support the corpus luteum, which is crucial for progesterone production and maintenance of early pregnancy.

Clinically, hCG is administered to induce final oocyte maturation and ovulation in women undergoing assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI). It is also used to support the luteal phase in certain fertility protocols. Multiple randomized controlled trials and systematic reviews demonstrate that hCG effectively triggers ovulation and supports the luteal phase, thereby improving the chances of successful conception and pregnancy in infertile women.

hCG’s role is also critical in the diagnosis and management of certain reproductive disorders, including anovulation and luteal phase defects. Its use is not based on tradition or anecdotal evidence but is grounded in a robust scientific understanding of reproductive endocrinology and supported by decades of clinical research and practice guidelines.
