Evidence supporting the use of: Inositol phosphate
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Inositol phosphates, particularly myo-inositol, are used to support the female reproductive system, with a focus on improving ovulatory function and metabolic profiles in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses provide scientific validation for this use. Myo-inositol acts as a secondary messenger in insulin signal transduction and ovarian function. Supplementation has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, normalize ovarian function, and restore menstrual cycles in women with PCOS. A 2016 meta-analysis published in Gynecological Endocrinology reported that myo-inositol supplementation improved ovulation rates and menstrual regularity in women with PCOS. Another 2017 systematic review in International Journal of Endocrinology found that myo-inositol improved oocyte quality and pregnancy rates in women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques. Moreover, inositol supplementation is generally well-tolerated and considered safe. However, while evidence is robust for PCOS and related fertility concerns, there is limited research supporting its use in women without these conditions. Overall, the use of inositol phosphate for supporting aspects of the female reproductive system, notably in PCOS, is scientifically validated and supported by moderate to strong clinical evidence.
