Evidence supporting the use of: Labisia pumila
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 3
Labisia pumila, commonly known as Kacip Fatimah, has a long history of traditional use in Malaysia and other Southeast Asian countries to support female reproductive health. Traditionally, it is used by women for easing childbirth, regulating menstrual cycles, and alleviating symptoms associated with menopause and post-partum recovery. The plant is often prepared as herbal teas or decoctions.
While the majority of evidence supporting its use is based on ethnobotanical and historical accounts, some preliminary scientific studies have begun to explore its potential mechanisms. These studies suggest that Labisia pumila may possess phytoestrogenic, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically benefit female reproductive health. However, robust clinical trials in humans are limited, and most available data are from animal studies or in vitro experiments. Therefore, while there is a strong traditional basis for its use, scientific validation remains incomplete and further research is required to confirm its efficacy and safety for reproductive health in women.
