Evidence supporting the use of: Spearmint
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Spearmint (Mentha spicata) has been traditionally used in various cultures for women's health, particularly for managing symptoms related to the female reproductive system. Historical uses include relief of menstrual discomfort and as a mild herb for balancing hormones. In Unani and traditional Iranian medicine, spearmint tea has been suggested for reducing hirsutism (excess hair growth) in women, a common symptom of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Limited clinical research supports this use: a couple of small studies have indicated that regular consumption of spearmint tea may decrease androgen (male hormone) levels and increase levels of female hormones such as luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) in women with PCOS, potentially benefiting symptoms like hirsutism.
However, these studies are small in scale and preliminary. Broader and more robust scientific validation is lacking, and the precise mechanisms of action remain unclear. There is also insufficient evidence to recommend spearmint for general reproductive health, fertility, or broader menstrual regulation. Thus, while traditional use is well-documented and some early scientific evidence exists, the overall support remains limited and primarily rooted in tradition rather than strong scientific consensus.
