Evidence supporting the use of: Squaw Vine
For the body system: Female Reproductive System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Squaw Vine (Mitchella repens) has a long history of use in traditional North American herbal medicine, particularly among Indigenous peoples and later by 19th-century herbalists. It has been employed primarily to support the female reproductive system, especially in preparation for childbirth, to ease labor, and to alleviate menstrual discomfort. The plant is often featured in traditional "partus preparator" blends, sometimes combined with other herbs like raspberry leaf. However, despite its enduring place in folk medicine, there is little to no modern scientific research validating these uses. Most available evidence is anecdotal or based on historical accounts rather than controlled clinical trials. As a result, while Squaw Vine's use for the female reproductive system is well documented in herbal traditions, there is insufficient scientific support at this time, leading to a low evidence rating.
