Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) has some scientific evidence supporting its use in the female reproductive system, particularly concerning fertility and menstrual health. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant that helps protect cell membranes from oxidative damage. Several studies have investigated its role in female reproductive health. For example, some research suggests that vitamin E supplementation may improve endometrial response and enhance the thickness of the endometrial lining, which is important for implantation and fertility. Additionally, vitamin E has been evaluated as part of treatment for women experiencing unexplained infertility or recurrent pregnancy loss, with mixed but occasionally positive results.

Vitamin E's antioxidant properties are theorized to protect ovarian and endometrial tissues from oxidative stress, which can negatively impact fertility. Clinical trials have also assessed vitamin E in alleviating premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms and dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation), with some showing modest benefits.

However, the overall quality of evidence is moderate at best, with some studies showing positive effects and others showing little or no benefit. The evidence base is not strong enough for unequivocal recommendations, but its role as an antioxidant and the observed benefits in some small trials merit a moderate rating. More large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to confirm these effects.
