Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

White Dead Nettle Flower (Lamium album) has a long-standing history of use in European folk medicine, particularly for supporting the female reproductive system. Traditionally, the flowers and aerial parts were used in teas or tinctures to address menstrual complaints, such as excessive or painful menstruation (menorrhagia and dysmenorrhea), leucorrhea (vaginal discharge), and to support general uterine health. Historical herbal texts from the 16th to 19th centuries, including those by Nicholas Culpeper and other herbalists, describe its “astringent” and mild anti-inflammatory qualities, which were believed to help tone the uterus and reduce heavy bleeding or discharge.

However, scientific research on White Dead Nettle’s effects on the female reproductive system is limited. Modern studies have focused on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mild antimicrobial properties, but not specifically on its efficacy for menstrual or uterine health. The traditional claims have not been validated in rigorous clinical trials, and most information stems from ethnobotanical and historical sources. Thus, while White Dead Nettle continues to be included in some traditional herbal formulas for women’s health, its use is justified primarily by tradition, with limited scientific backing at this time.
