Commiphora species, particularly Commiphora mukul (guggul) and Commiphora myrrha (myrrh), have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and traditional African medicine. In these systems, extracts and resins from Commiphora are often employed to treat a variety of ailments, including fever. Historical Ayurvedic texts describe formulations containing guggul or myrrh for their purported anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and febrifuge (fever-reducing) properties. The rationale for their use appears to be grounded in empirical observations and holistic approaches to balancing bodily humors, rather than in mechanistic scientific understanding.

Modern scientific research provides some support for the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of Commiphora extracts, which could theoretically contribute to fever reduction if the fever is due to infection or inflammation. Studies have identified bioactive compounds such as guggulsterones and terpenoids that modulate immune responses and inhibit microbial growth. However, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of Commiphora for fever management in humans is limited, and most available studies focus on other indications such as arthritis or hyperlipidemia. Therefore, while there is a rich tradition of using Commiphora for fever, scientific validation remains preliminary and indirect.
