Dodder (Cuscuta spp.) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese, Ayurvedic, and Unani systems. Within these traditions, dodder seeds are often employed to address a variety of ailments, including fever. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), dodder seed (Tu Si Zi) is primarily used for conditions related to the liver and kidneys, but some historical texts and herbal compendia mention its application for fever and inflammation due to its purported ability to "clear heat" and restore balance in the body. Similarly, in certain folk remedies, decoctions of dodder have been used as a cooling agent to reduce fever. However, the scientific evidence supporting dodder’s use specifically for the treatment of fever is minimal. Most contemporary research on dodder focuses on its antioxidant, immunomodulatory, and hepatoprotective effects rather than its antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties. While some animal studies suggest that extracts of Cuscuta may possess anti-inflammatory effects, these do not directly translate to clinical evidence for fever management in humans. Thus, the use of dodder for fever remains predominantly justified by traditional practices rather than by rigorous scientific validation. Further research is needed to confirm any antipyretic or fever-reducing effects and to establish safe and effective dosages for clinical use.
