Historically, easily digestible foods like rice porridge (such as congee or rice gruel) are recommended for individuals with fever or illness because they provide energy, are gentle on the digestive system, and help maintain hydration when appetite is low. In Ayurveda, rice (especially white rice) is considered cooling and light, making it suitable for people experiencing fever, which is often classified as a "pitta" imbalance (excess heat in the body). The use of rice in such traditions is not because it directly treats the fever or its underlying cause, but because it supports the body nutritionally during periods of illness and reduced appetite.

From a scientific perspective, there is little evidence to suggest that rice itself reduces fever or treats its underlying causes. However, rice is bland, low in fiber, and unlikely to irritate the stomach, making it a safe food choice when digestive tolerance is decreased. The main benefit is nutritional, rather than therapeutic. In summary, rice is used for fever support primarily based on traditional dietary practices and not on direct scientific evidence of antipyretic (fever-reducing) properties.
