Tinospora cordifolia (also known as Guduchi or Giloy) has a long history of use in traditional Ayurvedic medicine for the management of fever. Classical Ayurvedic texts, such as the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, describe Tinospora cordifolia as a potent "Rasayana" herb, valued for its antipyretic (fever-reducing) and immunomodulatory properties. Traditionally, the plant is recommended for treating various types of fevers, particularly those associated with infectious diseases, and as an adjunct to help restore health and vitality after fever.

Modern scientific studies have begun to provide some validation for these traditional uses. Preclinical research in animal models demonstrates that extracts of Tinospora cordifolia possess significant antipyretic activity, comparable in some studies to standard drugs like paracetamol. The activity is believed to be mediated through modulation of inflammatory cytokines and enhancement of immune function. Several in vitro and in vivo studies indicate the herb’s ability to reduce fever and inflammation, possibly due to its bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, diterpenoid lactones, and polysaccharides.

However, human clinical data remain limited, and most existing studies are small or of low methodological quality. While the traditional use is robust and supported by preliminary pharmacological evidence, higher-quality clinical trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy and safety for fever management. Overall, the use of Tinospora cordifolia for fever is justified by tradition, with moderate but not conclusive scientific support.
