For the health condition: Fibroids (uterine)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Saraca asoca (commonly known as Asoka or Ashoka) has a long-standing use in traditional Indian medicine, particularly Ayurveda, for the treatment of gynecological disorders including uterine fibroids, menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding), and other menstrual irregularities. The bark of the Asoka tree is a key ingredient in several classical Ayurvedic formulations such as Ashokarishta, which is often prescribed for managing symptoms associated with uterine fibroids and excessive menstrual bleeding. The traditional rationale is based on its reputed properties of balancing the female reproductive system, reducing uterine bleeding, and alleviating pain. Scientific validation for these uses is limited. Few in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts of Saraca asoca possess anti-inflammatory, estrogenic, and uterine tonic properties, which may theoretically contribute to symptomatic relief in fibroid-related conditions. However, robust clinical trials in humans specifically addressing the efficacy of Asoka for uterine fibroids are lacking. The majority of evidence remains anecdotal or based on small observational studies. Thus, while its use is well-established in traditional medicine, scientific evidence supporting its efficacy is preliminary and not yet conclusive.
