Evidence supporting the use of: Chinese Motherwort
For the health condition: Fibroids (uterine)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Chinese Motherwort (Leonurus japonicus) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for gynecological conditions, including uterine fibroids. In TCM, Chinese Motherwort is believed to "invigorate blood," "regulate menstruation," and "dispel stasis," which are traditional concepts related to menstrual disorders and masses such as fibroids. Historical texts and modern TCM practice frequently cite its use for symptoms like irregular menstruation, dysmenorrhea, and abdominal masses.
However, the scientific evidence specifically supporting Chinese Motherwort for the treatment of uterine fibroids is limited. There are a few in vitro and animal studies suggesting that Chinese Motherwort may have effects on uterine smooth muscle, anti-inflammatory properties, or influence hormone regulation, but these studies do not directly address fibroid shrinkage or symptom improvement in humans. Clinical trials in humans are lacking or of low quality, and systematic reviews do not currently support its efficacy for fibroids with robust evidence. Therefore, while its use is justified by tradition and historical practice, scientific validation is insufficient at this time. The rating reflects the presence of some promising preclinical evidence and longstanding traditional use, but a lack of high-quality clinical studies.
