For the health condition: Fibroids (uterine)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or "Bai Hua She She Cao" in Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practice. In TCM, it is commonly prescribed for conditions involving "toxic heat", inflammation, and masses, including various tumors and uterine fibroids. The rationale for its use in fibroids is rooted in its supposed ability to "clear heat and resolve toxins", which aligns with TCM theories about the pathogenesis of fibroids. However, scientific studies specifically examining Hedyotis diffusa for uterine fibroids are scarce. Most evidence comes from TCM case reports or from its inclusion in complex herbal formulas used for gynecological disorders. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that Hedyotis diffusa has anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory properties, but these have not been directly linked to clinical outcomes in fibroid patients. Systematic reviews and clinical trials directly supporting its efficacy for uterine fibroids are lacking as of 2024. Therefore, while its use is well established in traditional practice, the scientific evidence for its effectiveness in treating or supporting uterine fibroids is weak, and more rigorous research would be needed for validation.
