Evidence supporting the use of: Korean Angelica
For the health condition: Fibroids (uterine)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Korean Angelica (Angelica gigas) has a long history of use in traditional East Asian medicine, particularly in Korean and Chinese herbal practices. It is commonly used for women’s health issues, such as menstrual irregularities, menopausal symptoms, and general gynecological health. Its use for uterine fibroids is rooted in this traditional context, where it is believed to “invigorate blood” and address “blood stasis,” a concept in traditional medicine associated with masses and abnormal growths like fibroids.
However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Korean Angelica or its major constituents (such as decursin) specifically for uterine fibroids. Most available research focuses on its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential anti-tumor properties in vitro or in animal models, but not in the context of uterine fibroids in humans. No high-quality clinical trials have demonstrated effectiveness for this indication.
Therefore, while the use of Korean Angelica for fibroids is justified by tradition and historical herbal practices, scientific validation remains minimal. The evidence for its use in fibroids rates low (1/5), reflecting this lack of direct clinical support.
