Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Curcuma, commonly known as turmeric, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, for managing pain and inflammation. The rationale for its use in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is primarily based on its general anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties rather than on direct evidence specific to FMS. Curcumin, the main active compound in Curcuma, has shown some promise in reducing inflammatory markers and modulating pain in preclinical studies and small human trials for other chronic pain conditions, such as arthritis. However, high-quality clinical trials specifically investigating Curcuma or curcumin for fibromyalgia are lacking.

A few small pilot studies and case reports have suggested that turmeric/curcumin might improve symptoms such as pain and fatigue in fibromyalgia patients, but these studies are often limited by small sample size, lack of controls, and short duration. Most clinical guidelines for fibromyalgia do not recommend Curcuma as a primary or adjunct treatment due to insufficient evidence. Therefore, while its use for fibromyalgia is rooted in traditional and theoretical approaches to pain management, robust scientific validation is currently lacking. More rigorous research is needed before Curcuma can be recommended for fibromyalgia on a scientific basis.
