Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin D has been investigated as a supportive treatment for Fibromyalgia Syndrome (FMS) due to its role in musculoskeletal health and modulation of the immune system. Some scientific evidence suggests that individuals with fibromyalgia may have lower vitamin D levels compared to the general population. A few small clinical studies and observational reports have found that vitamin D supplementation might improve pain and quality of life in fibromyalgia patients who are deficient in vitamin D. However, larger randomized controlled trials have yielded mixed results. Some found modest benefits, while others found no significant improvement in pain or other fibromyalgia symptoms.

The biological rationale for using vitamin D centers on its importance for bone and muscle function, as well as its potential to reduce inflammation and influence neurotransmitter pathways involved in pain perception. However, the evidence is not robust enough to recommend vitamin D supplementation universally for all fibromyalgia patients, especially those with normal vitamin D levels. Current guidelines suggest checking vitamin D status in patients with fibromyalgia and correcting deficiencies as part of general health maintenance, rather than as a primary treatment for fibromyalgia itself. In summary, while there is some scientific basis for using vitamin D in fibromyalgia—particularly in deficient individuals—the overall quality and consistency of the evidence is modest.
