Catechins are a class of polyphenolic compounds found abundantly in tea (especially green tea), cocoa, and certain fruits. Their use to support or mitigate free radical damage is primarily justified by scientific evidence. Numerous in vitro and in vivo studies have demonstrated that catechins possess potent antioxidant properties. These compounds neutralize free radicals, thereby reducing oxidative stress, which is implicated in cellular aging and the pathogenesis of various chronic diseases.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), the most studied catechin, can scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS) and upregulate endogenous antioxidant defenses, such as glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase. Animal models and some human studies have shown that catechin supplementation leads to measurable reductions in biomarkers of oxidative stress. For example, a review in Antioxidants (2020) and findings from Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition (2017) both document catechins’ efficacy in decreasing lipid peroxidation and DNA damage due to free radicals.

While most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies, several clinical trials have also reported beneficial effects of catechin-rich beverages or supplements on oxidative stress markers in humans. Thus, the scientific foundation for using catechins to support defense against free radical damage is strong, though optimal dosing and long-term effects require further investigation.
