Chebulic acid, a phenolic compound found primarily in the fruits of Terminalia chebula (commonly known as Haritaki), has been the subject of several in vitro and animal studies investigating its potential antioxidant properties. The rationale for its use in supporting or treating free radical damage comes from its demonstrated ability to scavenge free radicals and inhibit oxidative stress in laboratory experiments. For example, studies published in peer-reviewed journals such as Phytotherapy Research and Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry have shown that chebulic acid and extracts of Terminalia chebula can reduce markers of oxidative damage in cells and animal models.
The antioxidant mechanism is believed to be due to chebulic acid’s polyphenolic structure, which allows it to neutralize reactive oxygen species (ROS) and upregulate endogenous antioxidant enzymes. However, it is important to note that most of the current evidence is preclinical and does not yet include robust human clinical trials specifically isolating chebulic acid. While the use of Terminalia chebula in traditional medicine for general health is well-documented, the direct scientific validation for chebulic acid’s efficacy against free radical damage in humans remains limited. Thus, while there is scientific interest and some preliminary validation, the evidence is currently rated as moderate to low (2 out of 5).
